a boater's approach to observation and artmaking

Boating on the British canals and rivers is all about going with the flow. In planning a journey, thinking too far ahead is futile. On any given day, there may be lock up ahead that is closed for repairs. There may be too much wind to drive the boat. You may unexpectedly run out of water and have to make a detour to the water point—or need to find better phone signal. In other words, you have no choice but to take things as they come.

But these surprises are also the perks of boating. Each unexpected situation comes with a reward: a kingfisher perched on a branch, the song of a reed warbler, a water vole popping up in front of your galley window. These are things you only see if you just so happen to be in the right place at the right time. And you are present enough to notice things.

My workshops and talks are about experiencing these fortuitous nature encounters together.

Are you trying to get (back) into a nature-journaling practice? Interested in discovering a new way to engage with the natural world? Do you enjoy natural illustration but are intimidated by the complexity of the subject or want to loosen up? Join me for some spontaneous and expressive artmaking!

I offer online programmes open to anyone in the world...

...as well as place-based workshops tailor-made to venues and their unique natural surroundings.
